Mise-en-scene

  • Lots of red - This links to the genre of both romance and thriller, red links to romance as it connotes with love, and hearts, valentines day. Red also links with thrillers as it is the colour of blood, and danger, and warning. The meaning of red within this film is significant especially to the woman, as it is her signature lipstick look, and also gives her an aura of lust, romance and danger too.
  • Newspapers - Inside the newspaper or on the front page, it usually contains a murder or killing of some sort  - this is ironic within the storyline as she is reading about murder, and is supposed to shock or scare her, but in fact she may be planning a murder herself.
  • Based around time/clocks - The clock links into the storyline as it is always counting down to the day that the man dies, and is a sense of realism within the story too as clocks are seen around us all the time.
  • The aesthetic of a train station, primary colours, trains - The trains remind the audience of the woman’s day to day life, and it is also a constant reminder of how the two meet. The fast rushing of the train can also link to the thriller genre, as thrillers are usually fast paced and dangerous, like a train.
  • Asda bag - This is significant to the man, as it is his signature item. He seems to carry this bag whenever we see him, and by seeing this bag, it will constantly remind the audience of the man.
  • Post it notes - This links with the narrative as she begins to get involved with the man’s life - it is her way of communicating with him indirectly.
  • Eyes and lips - These extreme close ups of the eyes and lips allow us to show the audience the characters reactions without giving away the entire face - this creates a sense of mystery which links with the thriller genre.
  • Polaroids - This links in with the narrative at the end, as it shows the audience how many victims the woman has potentially murdered.
  • Lipstick - This, along with the red lips, are a convention of the romance genre as lips and red connotate with kissing, and love. This is alo a key signature of the woman.
  • Heels - The heels show the womans maturity and sense of style. This links with the romance genre as heels are usually used to make a woman look sexy.

Film synopsis

Film Synopsis

Our film tells the story of a woman who lives the same, boring, ordinary mundane life every single day with the same patterns and organisation, until one day a strange man stands at the opposite platform to her, and becomes a regular in the mornings, just like her. They begin to create a special sort of bond, almost speaking to each other through facial expressions and gestures across the platforms, never saying a word to each other. She noticed that every morning he carries  the same asda bag containing his breakfast, a drink and a granola bar/piece of fruit. The woman starts to become infatuated with this man and the audience is led to believe that she falls in love with him, as he does her. She begins to take a more forward approach by leaving sticky notes on his side of the platform, leaving a cute message very now and then, always leaving a smiley face at the end. On one sticky note she leaves her phone number, and the man starts to text message her, but she never replies to him on the phone, she only talks to him through the sticky notes. As she becomes more infatuated and slightly involved with his life, she begins to start buying his Asda breakfast for him, even though she has only seen what he had in the mornings from a far away distance. Both characters will have something distinctive about them, for example, the woman may always wear a ed shade of lipstick, and the man will have an asda bag with him - this can help differentiate these two characters from everyone else. In each and every sticky note, it always counts down to one particular date, and even though the man repeatedly asks her what the date means, she would always shake her head, or refuse to tell him. As the day arrives, she leaves a note telling him to meet her on her side of the station platform at night to catch the last train together, so they could finally meet properly. Once they finally meet at the end, we see the man and woman walk into the passageway of another platform, where the woman hides a knife behind her back. She then leaves the station, where we are taken back to her bedroom where she sticks up a photograph of this newfound lover on her wall, surrounded by many other photographs of men and women, fading into a black screen.

The Prisoner

The scene starts off by showing a dark car in the foreground and a brightly lit diner in the background. There is a low key lighting (foreground) and a high key lighting (background) combo, this contrast suggests that inside the diner it is safe and calm whereas it is mysterious and dangerous outside. Furthermore it is raining heavily which sets a foreboding tone and also it could be the use of pathetic fallacy suggesting a characters emotion. This helps me to understand what is going to happen and it will allow me to understand how a certain character might be feeling. Moving on, a long shot is shown to the audience and the camera slowly tracks in on the lonesome character signifying his role in the scene. This is followed by a mid shot with a shallow depth of field, he is the main focus in the shot which tells me that I should focus my attention on the character and not anywhere else. In addition the camera very slowly tracks in on the character which further backs up his importance in the shot. The rain and thunder can still be heard even if we are inside the diner which carries that foreboding tone. Up next is a long shot showing me and the viewers that he is at the diner alone which suggest to the viewers that he might be lonely and might not have many friends. Also a soundbridge is used, I can hear a police radio however, the shot is still in the diner and this tells me that there is going to be a jump cut to a place where a police radio can be heard. Afterwards a mid long shot is used to show the character getting into his car and the camera tracks out to reveal that he is getting into the dark car that was shown in the beginning of the scene. Also now we see the character leave the high key lighting setting and move to the low key lighting setting which suggests to the demographic that something bad may happen. This is then followed up by a close up which shows us the characters facial expression which is quite serious in the shot and it creates a serious atmosphere. Also it is followed by a extreme close up showing us the side of his face in low key lighting which makes him look like a silhouette. Additionally the diegetic sound of rain and thunder has become louder which makes me feel suspicious and it makes the scene just a little bit more intense.

The next shot is an over the shoulder with the trees in focus and the shallow depth of field changes and the focus changes from the background to the foreground revealing the man sitting inside the car, this adds a mysterious and suspicious tone as the demographic cannot see the man’s face this is also backed up by the low key lighting. The non diegetic high pitch sound in the background makes me feel like as if something bad is going to happen as it sounds like a ringing in my ears that tends to occur when one is concussed creating an ominous atmosphere. The scene then shows a car leaving a petrol station however there are no other cars that can be seen in the shot which makes it seem more mysterious to me as I cannot see any other life forms in the shot making me wonder where all the other people are. Also the lighting in the petrol station is very bright but the area around it is completely pitch black and we cannot see a thing, as I see the car driving towards the camera (away from the brightly lit petrol station), it seems to me as if the character is driving into the darkness.  The car stops right in front of the camera making it a close mid shot allowing the

viewers to see the characters facial expression which is quite serious adding a bit of intensity to the scene. This is followed by an over the shoulder shot, focusing on what the character is looking at which is a caravan parked by itself with its headlights on and this adds mystery, as to who or what is inside the caravan. A close mid shot is used again and we can hear the police radio and the character responds and gets out of the car and as he does the camera moves diagonally upwards to the right to stay on the character at eye level. It cuts to a long shot showing the character closing the door and police cars that have arrived. The police cars indicate that danger is looming and they have to stop it. This sets an ominous tone and dark atmosphere making me feel uneasy. After a close mid shot was used to show the characters facial expression which shows us that he is intrigued by what the caravan withholds. Then it goes back the long shot which slowly tracks in showing the character and some police officers walking towards the caravan and as this happens the music starts to grow louder and it makes the scene intense. The next shot is a mid long shot and the character slowly walks towards the camera making it a mid shot and we can still see the intrigued look on his face. It then parallel cuts to the guy in the caravan and in the shot low key lighting is used and we can only see a silhouette of the back of his head, this creates mystery as to who the guy is and what he is doing. The tense music grows loud at this point which suggests that the guy is evil linked to it. We are then shown a point of view shot as we can see what the guy in the caravan is looking at and in this case he is looking at his side view mirror in which he can see the main character waking towards his caravan. Then it goes back to the shot of the guy and we see his head move to the side and again a point of view shot is used but this time it is of the other mirror but only bright lights can be seen. This builds tension and suspense as the guy does not have much time until they catch him.

Crimson Peak Analysis

Yumi
Crimson Peak Analysis

The scene starts off with the girl waking up to the sound of the dog barking. In this shot there is low key lighting which creates a dark atmosphere making it feel mysterious and suspicious. Also to add on to the dark and mysterious atmosphere the non-diegetic sound used is ominous and eerie which suggests to the viewers that something strange is going to happen in the scene, this builds tension and suspense. An arc shot is used to reveal the fact that she was expecting someone to be sleeping next to her and this raises questions to the audience such as who was sleeping next to her? And where did the person go? A crane shot is used where it starts from the girl’s feet to her face and it reveals her facial expression which shows that she is quite confused and spooked as she has no idea what is going on. A tracking shot was used to spin the camera and to reveal the door opening and creaking by itself which implies that there is something creepy about the house and that a ghost might be involved which spooks the audience. Furthermore the use of (diegetic sound) the wind howling and the echo of her voice allows the demographic to understand the genre of the film and it adds on to the ominous and eerie tone.

The tension and suspense builds as she goes to open the door to find out what is making the noises behind it and the camera tracks into the handle which gives the impression that something is behind the door not just a dog and it raises questions again to the demographic such as what/who is behind the door? However a crane shot is used to reveal that the dog is not behind the door and a lot of tracking in shots are used as it tracks into the dog to signify that he is not behind the door and a reaction shot is used and again it tracks in as she realises that there is something else behind the door and since it is a close up the demographic can see that she is spooked and shocked as she doesn’t know what is behind the door. A medium shot is then used and this reveals the red creature that is behind the door and it slams the door shut and the girl’s facial expression and the way she jumps back from the door shows us that she is scared and frightened. The non-diegetic music then builds up creating the ominous tone and dark/eerie atmosphere. A tracking shot is then used to follow the girls arm as she goes to open the door and along with the music tension and suspense is created as the demographic will be expecting her to find the creature however, the tension and suspense dies down after a smash shot is used to show that the creature is not behind the door and this again raises questions as to where the creature went?

As the creature comes out of the floor the camera tracks in to give it a 3D feel to the audience and it shows the creature is evil as it gets bigger in the frame. Also it is very dark behind the creature it could mean it was born in the dark and since it came out from the floor it could suggest that the dead are rising. A medium shot is then used to show the girl slowly walking backwards in fear but also to show the dog running away which could signify that the creature is evil as dogs tend to run away in the presence of evil. This is followed by another medium shot of the creature as it drags itself towards the girl creating tension. A tracking shot is used as the girl runs towards the camera and we can see the panic and frightened look on her face, also you can hear her panting heavily (diegetic sound) which suggests that she is running for her life. We as the viewers feel scared for her as we would be scared like her if we were in her position as well. A medium shot is used to show the door closing by itself and a close up of the elevator handle is used and it tracks out, this could mean that something supernatural is going on and the camera movement emphasises on this.
